Travel by bus along the Whanganui River road, visiting Koriniti Marae and on to Hiruharama (Jerusalem). Photograph St. Joseph’s Church and the convent, run by the Sisters of Compassion since 1892. In the 1970’s the famous New Zealand poet James K. Baxter, and his followers, lived here. Click here for River Road Map.

TF2: Jet Boat Trip - Bridge to Nowhere - FULL DAY (Limited to 30 people) - NOTE - Additional cost of $110 per person
An early morning departure by bus from Wanganui to Pipiriki. Board a jet boat for a spectacular journey up the Whanganui River to the Bridge to Nowhere (a 40 minute walk from the river, classed as easy and suitable for all ages). This is a full day trip. The additional cost for this jet boat option on our Field Trip day is $110. Numbers are limited to the carrying capacity of up to 3 boats (30 people) For more information see this website. If you wish to take this trip (or one of the others offered by ‘Spirit of the River Jet’, either before or after the convention, contact Brent or Claire Firmin on 0800 538 8687 to make a booking.

TF3: Queens Park, Museum, Sarjeant Gallery - HALF DAY (morning or afternoon)
In the city centre we have Queens Park (cenotaph, gardens, sculptures and views), surrounded by the diverse architecture of the Museum, Sarjeant Gallery, Memorial Hall, and Alexander Library. This trip includes a guided tour of the Te Pihi Mata: The Sacred Eye, an exhibition of 19th century photographs of Whanganui Maori by William Partington. Also visit the Laurence Aberhart photography exhibition at the Sarjeant Gallery. Time to explore Queen's Park or drop into a local cafe.

TF4: Tour to Artists and Galleries - HALF DAY (morning or afternoon)
Visit and photograph working artists... glass artists (Chronicle Glass studio), painters, sculptors, potters, and a print maker... as you work your way around the historic central business district. Wanganui is well known as a New Zealand art centre. You will certainly get inspired by the creative 'raw' talent of our locals, and the many overseas artists who now live and work here.

TF5: Durie Hill, Cooks Gardens, and the paddle steamer Waimarie - HALF DAY (morning or afternoon)
Get a bird’s eye view of the historic city of Wanganui from 2 lookout towers on different sides of the river. Amazing photographic opportunities from inside the tunnel and tower. There will be an opportunity to photograph the paddle steamer Waimarie.

TF6: Bushy Park Nature Reserve - HALF DAY (morning or afternoon)
Talk about raw beauty.  The 90 hectares of healthy regenerated forest abound with native birds and N.Z.’s largest northern rata, ‘Ratanui.’.  Well formed tracks provide visitors with easy access to the bush and birds.  The Edwardian homestead itself is not to be missed at Bushy Park.  We’re proud of the new Xcluder Pest Proof Fence that surrounds the park, and has eliminated introduced predators, a first in New Zealand, keeping safe endangered and rare species such as Saddleback and Kiwi. There is also an abundance of Tui and Keruru.

Workshop Options for Friday 17th April 2009

FW1/FW7 – John Burford - How to Make a ProShow Audio Visual
Learn the basics of AV production. John will use the popular software from Photodex... but the principles are the same in any AV software. Combine photos, music, text, and audio, to create a show for any occasion.

(please contact us if you are interested in a parallel workshop, run by Trish McAuslan, on how to produce an AV using Fotomagico and Garageband on an Apple computer).

FW2/FW8 – John Doogan - Adobe Photoshop
The ten most useful things I know about Photoshop. This workshop concentrates on the ten things in Photoshop I think are most useful for photographers. The emphasis will be more on 'bang for buck' than an in-depth technical analysis. So even if you're not a Photoshop user, come along, you may pick up some useful ideas.

FW3/FW9 – Binh Trinh Life Photography
Artistic figure studies... or nude photography, as it is sometimes called... photographing the human form. We will have experienced models and photographers leading this workshop, to demonstrate different
'exposures' and lighting techniques. See Binh's website, and his website The Naked Truth with examples of his work.

FW4/FW10 – Narelle Autio - Check back here for updates for this workshop
We don't yet know exactly what Narelle will be up to in this workshop. But check out her speciality on this gallery, and know that the swimming pool next to the Auditorium at Collegiate (our venue) will be inviting her... and you, to explore 'water' photography. There are no flies on this Aussie, who was photographing a dead shark with her partner Trent Parke, when I last talked to her on the phone.

FW5/FW11 – Rob Lile – Stock Photography & Stock Image Libraries
Rob runs www.photonewzealand.com the main NZ stock image library. He knows exactly what's going on in this competitive industry, and will guide us around the many options here and overseas, for both the amateur and professional photographer.

FW6 – Rita Dibert – Introduction to Cyanotypes - Part 1
Rita is a world expert on alternative photographic processes, and is opening the huge lab at UCOL in Wanganui to work with you in creating a cyanotype print or two. This is a very special opportunity to work the magic of a 'raw' photographic process that few photographers (film or digital) have experienced. This workshop is limited to 10 people. See Rita's website.

FW12 – Rita Dibert – Introduction to Cyanotypes – Part 2
For those who have caught the 'cyanotype' bug, and who wish to continue with an afternoon session, Rita has kindly offered to persevere with you and all those lovely smelling chemicals!

Workshop Options for Saturday 18th April 2009

The ten most useful things I know about Lightroom. How does Lightroom differ from Photoshop? How will it help my photography? Tips and tricks for those already using Lightroom or thinking about it. Come along and get your questions answered.

SW3/SW9 – Tony Bridge - PSNZ Judging and Honours
Learn about PSNZ Honours and how to get those fancy letters behind your name (e.g. APSNZ). Or come to this workshop to learn the art of judging competition images, or at least understand better what the judges say about your photos.

SW4/SW10 – Mark Brimblecombe - Why shoot RAW?
A practical demonstration taking photos in both JPEG and RAW, to show the many benefits of shooting RAW and editing a RAW image. This isn't complex... just see the superior results when playing with those little sliders in Lightroom. This workshop is for those still shooting JPEGs, who are apprehensive about making the switch.
See Mark's website.

SW5/SW11 – Rob Lile - How to Succeed in Stock Photography
Success in stock photography essentially means knowing how to make good photos for stock and how to market them. Learn about the creative options for photography to earn dollars.

SW6/SW12 – Craig Potton – Exhibit and Publish
Photography as communication. How to exhibit and how to publish your work. Craig needs no introduction here in New Zealand. Every book store in the country is selling his wonderful scenic New Zealand books! Learn from the man who set up his own publishing company to ensure that his images 'printed' in the best possible way.
